Another Abortion Horror

This is just disturbing:

From the Boston Globe (emphasis mine):

TAMPA - The Board of Medicine has revoked the license of a Florida doctor accused of medical malpractice in a botched abortion case in which a baby was delivered live, but ended up dead in a cardboard box.

The board yesterday found Dr. Pierre Jean-Jacque Renelique in violation of Florida statutes by committing medical malpractice, delegating responsibility to unlicensed personnel, and failing to keep an accurate medical record. Renelique and his attorney declined to comment after the hearing.

The Department of Health said Renelique was scheduled to perform an abortion on a teenager who was 23 weeks' pregnant in 2006.

Sycloria Williams had been given drugs in advance to dilate her cervix.

According to the complaint, she gave birth at a Hialeah clinic after waiting hours for Renelique to arrive. The complaint said one of the clinic owners put the baby in a bag that was then thrown away.

Police found the infant's decomposing remains a week later.

A medical examiner determined the cause of death was extreme prematurity, the complaint states.

At yesterday's hearing, Renelique told the board of his lifelong quest to be a doctor. He said that there are generations of physicians in his family and that he decided to follow the same path after seeing his father treat patients.
Renelique described saving a woman's life during the second year of his medical residency in Haiti. He later left his home country to work and train in the United States. It was never his intention to do abortions, he said. "But I had to do it to survive," he said.

That the teenager was 23 weeks pregnant, and finally decides she wants an abortion is disgusting enough. How do you wait that long to decide this course of action? That's almost 5 months.

How this doctor can not be charged with manslaughter is baffling. This was not a partial-birth abortion. This was a baby that, because of his neglect and purposeful intentions, was born alive and left to die. Revoking his license is the only punishment he is to receive?

And what of the clinic owner who put the baby in a bag and left it to rot?

This must have been some talented doctor. "It was never his intention to do abortions, he said. "But I had to do it to survive".

That's some perverted irony right there.

This baby is a martyr. His/her death may have just saved the lives of many from this animal.

"That's almost 5 months."

Actually, it's almost 6 months.

I can't understand a doctor who takes the Hippocratic oath and then decides he has to perform late term abortions "to survive". How can a doctor go home with a clean conscience after a days work of saving some lives and willfully destroying other lives? I'll never understand it.

I hope they string him up (... (Below threshold)

I hope they string him up (literally) on murder charges. This was an absolute outrage! What happened to valuing human beings? This baby could have survived and been given to an adoptive family that would have loved her. This is just sickening.

How this doctor can not be charged with manslaughter is baffling

That's easy, this is a crime of murder, not manslaughter.

Under current law a baby becomes fully protected under the law when they draw their first breath. The autopsy will show if the baby did in fact draw a breath, and if so, whoever put this child in the plastic bag committed a homicide. The only question is what degree of murder to charge them with.

This has nothing to do with a woman's right to choose unless we are going to extend that right to born children.

I did read somewhere that the autopsy showed that the baby's lungs were filled with air, pretty much proving she had taken a breath.

This is murder. Plain and simple. (Hey Shawn, we agree about something!!!)

It is also a refutation of the pro-choice line that showing women who want an abortion the truth about their baby's development at certain stages is a joke.

The mother, as uninformed, perhaps even dumb, learned that she made a mistake, probably due to lack of knowledge. Had she known her baby might survive at that time, would she have had an abortion?

It's impossible to know because there are restrictions on educating women seeking an abortion.

And, given the circumstance... (Below threshold)

And, given the circumstances - should we not be congratulating the actions of the mother of octuplets for not wanting to abort any of them?

Or should we find photos of Sycloria Williams and make fun of her lips?

Just asking. :-)

Without getting into a deep... (Below threshold)

Without getting into a deep discussion on the topic, the way I see it, if you make it to week 23, you've MADE YOUR CHOICE - the choice to keep the baby.

I appreciate someone mentio... (Below threshold)

I appreciate someone mentioning that there are laws prohibiting the informed consent of women for the abortion procedure. Roe vs Wade allows abortion all the way up to delivery for any reason, in any state. Some restrictions apply as to WHERE it can be done...a hospital vs a clinic. Doe vs Dalton came a bit later making sure women were left in the dark about it.
This baby is what the medical profession call a 'dreaded complication'. If she had been born in a hospital, she could have been killed legally....but being born in a clinic changed the doctors responsibilities. Sad but true.
