Hilarity ensues as acclaimed super-genius and lightworker orchestrates an inspiring new photo for his Facebook page

Mission Accomplished!

Remember when high-flying hijinks by a president involved an S3-B Viking, USS Abraham Lincoln, and a seemingly innocuous banner congratulating a carrier battle group for successfully completing its tour in the Persian Gulf? Lacking subtlety and nuance, Bush's trip was ridiculed by the left as merely a reeking-of-machismo, wanna-be chickenhawk staging a photo op. Likewise, appearing in front of a banner declaring "Mission Accomplished" was lambasted as stupid, irresponsible, short-sighted, and prematurely declaring victory in what would prove to be a long, difficult, nearly forfeited (thanks to Obama and his ilk) slog to victory.

Hell, CBS News was still agitated over it last year:

"Mission Accomplished," 5 Years Later
Since Bush Declared End To Major Combat Operations In Iraq, Nearly 4,000 U.S. Troops Have Died

May 1, 2008

It was a picture-perfect moment, made for the TV cameras, in which a military leader stood before heroes and heroines to declare a victory which seemed to come easier than anyone dared hope, in a conflict which was opposed by many friends and foes alike.

May 1 marks the fifth anniversary of President George W. Bush's "Mission Accomplished" speech, as heralded by a giant banner strung across the deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln.

After shifting explanations, the White House eventually said the "Mission Accomplished" phrase referred to the carrier's crew completing their 10-month mission, not the military completing its mission in Iraq.

Right, it's the whole "thousands more soldiers about whom we're pretending to care for the time being died in the war after the banner incident" thing. Or maybe the it was the shifting explanations of the banner's meaning? The banner meant whatever the people it was honoring that day wanted it to mean - an unacceptable answer to a media query during the Bush years. So it became an allegory for lack of vision and premature exuberation.

Maybe a banner proclaiming "Change!" would have been less easily misconstrued.

Then who can forget The Legend of the Plastic Turkey in Baghdad? Man, the press sure hated to see Bush have his photo taken in a setting that might interfere with their scorched earth campaign against him.

Now that the dunce is gone Obama has taken aerial shenanigans to a bold - nay, visionary - new level. I applaud his intricate brilliance. Could there be a clearer illustration of Obama's attention to detail vis a vis the barnstorming cowboy Bush? Eight years in the White House and he never noticed there's no official White House photo of Air Force One in frame with the Statue of Liberty. What a rube.

Because nothing says "first 100 days" like dispatching your minions to strike terror into the hearts of New Yorkers for a vanity photo.

Naturally, it won't get past the Metro section of the NYT even though it's funny on so many levels.

  • Is Obama really so stupid as to believe a low flying airliner being trailed by two F-16s making a couple of passes near NYC wouldn't invoke panic?
  • Did he even know it was happening? At what level does "fly AF1 and escorts low over Ellis Island for photo op" need to be approved?
  • Who decided this photo needed to be taken? What was the impetus?
  • How much did it cost? Who decided it was a wise investment in this time of $2 trillion dificits?
  • How many tons of CO2 were emitted in the filming of this event?
  • Is Obama planning to photograph AF1 at any other popular tourist destinations?
  • Maybe he's one of those 9/11 Truther types and just wanted to see how difficult it would be to pull off 9/11 as an inside job?
  • Is there any doubt this photo and a "bring us your tired, poor, and huddled masses" tag line were going to appear in an amnesty campaign?
What a buffoon. Obama will deny, a couple of innocent heads will roll, then five years from now we'll all look back and laugh. In the grand scheme of things it is a trifling matter. But yet another small example of what sort of administration we're stuck with for the next four years - an imperial president feeding his sense of entitlement through taxpayer funded excess. At least Bush had a valid justification for his tax-payer funded carrier landing. I await a strident defense of pointless tax-payer funded pizza junkets and photo ops.

Nice dodge Dickhead. Just more of that "most efficient and intelligent administration, evah!"
But back to Dickhead. TWO people got "tortured" under guidelines so strick, the torturee was all but guaranteed 'this won't hurt, it's all in your mind'. As for the non-funding. Didn't one of your Republican hero's in the senate cut that from the pork bill? You remember pork, don't you? You screamed about in during Bush's tenure, but have no problem with it under Obama.
Like I said Dickhead, nice dodge.

You know, there's legitimate criticism to fling here, but you guys are really blowing it by hysterically making this all about Obama. I especially like how Baron pins this on Obama's personal involvement and belief, followed by wondering if Obama even knew, followed by asking who authorized it. Aside from the self-contradiction in the hilarity Baron sees, the several articles linked to by both Kim and Kevin already answered those questions.

Maybe you can post another about how Obama was probably flying the plane himself!

Sorry, Brian, but we know that Dick Cheney personally hung the Mission Accomplished banner on the USS Abraham Lincoln. Therefore, we can be sure that President Obama ordered noted genius Joe Biden to personally fly the mission himself. It's the new paradigm, as established by the left, and I'm sticking with it.
