Late Thoughts

The much ballyhooed confrontation between the new, untested US President and his older, pragmatic Israeli counterpart has ended.

And it's been a short, if not terse, exchange.

As expected, Obama pressed Prime Minister Netanyahu on the issue of the "two-state solution" and "freezing" Israeli settlement activity. Netanyahu did not speak of an actual two-state solution, but said it is in the interest of all involved that the Palestinians should have the right to govern themselves as responsible, peaceful counterparts.

Sounds pretty much the same.

And while Obama can preach from his ivory tower all he wants about how he won't wait forever for Iran to halt it's nuclear aspirations, Netanyahu has to actually deal with that prospect with a more immediate, pressing attitude. With recent bombastic rhetoric from Iranian President Ahmadinejad, calling for Israeli's outright destruction, an Iranian General stating he could "wipe out" Israel in 11 days, the fact that 40 percent of Arab-Israelis believe that the Holocaust didn't occur, and Iran just completing a test fire of a mid-range missile capable of hitting Israel, it is no wonder that the Israeli Prime Minister doesn't have the same sense of "wait and see" approach that Obama has attempted to impress on him.

During the exchange, Obama seemed also to leave the door open for possible "peaceful" Iranian nuclear usage, presumably for it's use in electrical power (funny how he will consider that acceptable for Iran but not for us). This would somehow equate to diplomatic "leverage" when confronting Iran "in a year". This glosses over the fact that Iran is well on it's way to developing nuclear power intended for destructive purposes. It also does nothing to address the possibility of spent nuclear material from "peaceful" means which could be used as a "dirty bomb", having a devastating and desired effect on Israel, considering the country is about the size of New Jersey.

All in all, it was quite refreshing to have a head of state not hypnotized by Obama's boundless rhetoric. It seems as if he may have met his match with Netanyahu, a man who's country is surrounded by enemies, and a man who doesn't have the time nor desire to bow down and accept a leash put on him by his naive US counterpart.

Obamalala obviously didn't read the file on Netanyahu as he went in with the same old view. That maybe the Palestinians wouldn't be such bad neighbors after all if they were treated better by the nasty, paranoid Israel. What's to worry about? Obamalala has Iran on the ropes and ready to scream uncle over weapons of mass destruction going to Hamas and Hezbolah. Netanyahu has read the file on Obamalala and knows more about him than most Americans. To say he is naive is putting it mildly.

When it comes to reporting ... (Below threshold)

When it comes to reporting on major world events, it helps to view Obama and the liberals as a group of squealing 8th grade girls. Just mix in things like "Totally!", "OMG!", "Ewwwwwwww!", "Seriously?", "No way!" and you pretty much have the liberal fix on just about any news story involving world politics, where, like, people totally die and stuff.

It sounds like Netanyahu went home scratching his head in wonder.

I doubt he was shaking his head in wonder. The decline of American testosterone has been well documented. Its a sad cycle, and it foolish to think we could rise to the occasion like we did post Pearl Harbor, and maintain our fervor, because we've demonstrated as a united nation we can't in the past 8 years.

Mac Lorry:

Obama's plan is to keep talking until Israel is forced to act. Then Obama can claim he was making progress in negotiating a peaceful settlement until some old school warmongers started dropping bombs. Of course he'll make the same claim if Iran attacks Israel first.

My head is spinning. Never in my wildest dreams did I believe Obama could be this immature, inexperienced and totally dangerous. I see very tough times ahead for all of us -- both in the U.S. and around the world.

No matter what happens in the middle east,
Obama will claim he inherited the problem.

More seriously, I don't think Obama cares in the least what happens to Israel.

Anyone want to wager a guess on when the Israeli's will take independent action on Iran? They sure as hell no that President Waffles isn't going to be of any help. If His magnificent tongue can't get the job done, he just ignores the problem. Probably learned that from his 'community organizing' days, coupled with his 'vast executive experience'.

I truly believe that a speechwriter in the White House has already been tasked with writing a "speech for the ages!"

This speech, delivered with passion by our Dear Leader, will seek to heal and comfort us all...and to get America and the WORLD to declare in one strong voice: "Never Again!"

The speech will begin...
"As you know, Israel was today bombarded with nuclear weapons from Iran. The estimates you have heard of 5 million Jews dead are, I regret to inform you, accurate..."

Netanyahu's job is, of course, to see that Obama never gets to deliver his "speech for the ages". Chris Mathew's leg will just have to tingle on its own.

Obama didn't "inherit" anything! He applied for the job and got it. Time to start acting like you wanted it Mr. President!

"Anyone want to wager a guess on when the Israeli's will take independent action on Iran?"
In the next 2 years they will take no direct military actions against Iran. I'll be happy to eat my words but I don't think I'll have too.
