AIP Column: Scorched Earth Policies

Today my column at American Issues Project addresses the massive push by Obama and his allies in Congress to pass both health care and cap and trade even though polls show tepid if not outright resistance to both programs. This is my conclusion:

We can't help but ask why the president and his allies in Congress are in such a rush to pass these two massive programs when the programs could send our country's economy over the precipice and into national bankruptcy. The key is 2010. The American people are becoming more and more disgusted with the enormous spending sprees that Obama and the left in Congress have enjoyed for the past six months, and which we have all just learned have driven the deficit to $1.2 trillion. Peter Ferrera at The American Spectator is predicting that the 2010 elections will be a "political earthquake" as conservatives turn out leftists, statists, and Obama-loyal Blue Dogs in droves on both federal and state levels. The desperation that Obama and the Democrats are exhibiting as they bulldoze these programs through, which they are willing to do even if that requires only Democrats voting for them, seems to indicate that they are sensing the same type of earthquake is coming and that they had better move forward at mach speed.

Obama and his statist allies know they may very well lose control of seats in Congress in 2010, so if they sense impending electoral doom, it may explain the frenetic pace at which they are working to put their dream policies permanently in place, even if it means sending America's economy on a runaway train to bankruptcy. This is scorched earth politics at its most cynical, because once Cap and Trade and a government-run health care system are passed and implemented, they will be virtually impossible to reverse. And that is something that Obama and his allies are counting on.

You can read all of it and comment on it as well at American Issues Project.

My argument is supported by the fact that Obama and his statist allies in Congress are dismissing the warnings from the CBO that health care on top of current federal spending is unsustainable:

Today CBO delivered letters to Senators Kent Conrad and Judd Gregg that respond to their request for information about the features of health care reform proposals that would affect federal spending on health care over the long term. In the absence of significant changes in policy, rising costs for health care will cause federal spending to grow much faster than the economy, putting the federal budget on an unsustainable path.

Obama is completely ignoring the CBO's warnings and is pushing ahead on his agenda anyway, as he announced today. In fact, he's using a full court press to get it done and has scheduled a prime time press conference on Wednesday night. I am predicting he will use thee exact same scare tactics he used to get his disaster of a stimulus bill passed and will describe how our economy is on a path to doom and catastrophe if we don't get his health care reform bill passed.

Barry grew up in a socialist household. Socialism works. End of debate, end of argument. Any failures of socialism are due directly to the failure of the people to properly embrace the concept. Barry can do no wrong. Barry knows everything. Therefore, anyone contemplating any other course of action is WRONG. And it hurts Barry's feelings. Barry is all about feelings.

Abe Lincoln...

It's official. America and the World are now in a GLOBAL PANDEMIC. A World EPIDEMIC with potential catastrophic consequences for ALL of the American people. The first PANDEMIC in 41 years. And WE THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES will have to face this PANDEMIC with the 37th worst quality of healthcare in the developed World.

We spend over twice as much of our GDP on healthcare as any other country in the World. And Individual American spend about ten times as much out of pocket on healthcare as any other people in the World. All because of GREED! And the PRIVATE FOR PROFIT healthcare system in America.

And while all this is going on, some members of congress seem mostly concern about how to protect the corporate PROFITS! of our GREED DRIVEN, PRIVATE FOR PROFIT NATIONAL DISGRACE. A PRIVATE FOR PROFIT DISGRACE that is in fact, totally valueless to the public health. And a detriment to national security, public safety, and the public health.

Progressive democrats the Tri-Caucus and others should stand firm in their demand for a robust government-run public option for all Americans, with all of the minimum requirements progressive democrats demanded. If congress can not pass a robust public option with at least 51 votes and all robust minimum requirements, congress should immediately move to scrap healthcare reform and request that President Obama declare a state of NATIONAL HEALTHCARE EMERGENCY! Seizing and replacing all PRIVATE FOR PROFIT health insurance plans with the immediate implementation of National Healthcare for all Americans under the provisions of HR676 (A Single-payer National Healthcare Plan For All).

Coverage can begin immediately through our current medicare system. With immediate expansion through recruitment of displaced workers from the canceled private sector insurance industry. Funding can also begin immediately by substitution of payroll deductions for private insurance plans with payroll deductions for the national healthcare plan. This is what the vast majority of the American people want. And this is what all objective experts unanimously agree would be the best, and most cost effective for the American people and our economy.

In Mexico on average people who received medical care for A-H1N1 (Swine Flu) with in 3 days survived. People who did not receive medical care until 7 days or more died. This has been the same results in the US. But 50 million Americans don't even have any healthcare coverage. And at least 200 million of you with insurance could not get in to see your private insurance plans doctors in 2 or 3 days, even if your life depended on it. WHICH IT DOES!

If President Obama has to declare a NATIONAL STATE OF EMERGENCY to rescue the American people from our healthcare crisis, he will need all the sustained support you can give him. STICK WITH HIM! He's doing a brilliant job.

Join the fight.

Contact congress and your representatives NOW! AND SPREAD THE WORD!

God Bless You

I am on board with the two... (Below threshold)

I am on board with the two ideas, the one suggested by the President Obama: Based on a new report that details how much waste and inefficiency there is in medicare, how best practices are not always used, how many billions of dollars could be saved, the independent groups of doctors and medical experts to oversee long-term cost saving measures every year force congress to make sure that they are acting on these recommendations to bend the cost curve each and every year.
The other idea echoed by New York Times;
"Meanwhile, it will be important to get some guaranteed fast savings from the health care industries by cutting and reallocating hundreds of billions of dollars from projected spending on Medicare and Medicaid...Just to be sure, Congress ought to establish a fail-safe mechanism that could impose additional cuts after a few years if savings are less than projected."
I agree that In the near-term, this type of accountability will ensure that health reform legislation is fiscally responsible and fully financed. In the long-term, it will make certain that our health system, especially Medicare, is sustainable for generations to come. Well it seems like the board has just been spammed by a mindless autoposter or two that have no connection to the actual content of the article in question and are set up to spreading the Administration's BS wherever possible; and Adrian is here, that's not redundant at all.
The head of the CBO did just say that these "reforms" would not save any money and in factwould lead to unsustainable government expeenditures. We can't afford to NOT reform healthcare indeed.
I guess this is all more doublespeak. We have to Spend money to save money. And something that was too important to think through, or debate, or read was designed to not work for two years anyway. The Ministry of Truth has nothing on these guys.

and got 596 hits.

1. Obama thinks he knows everything and he can better manage every aspect of the U.S. and our lives if only we would let him. Such arrogance is not going to change. The people, however, are finally waking up. Congress got an earful from their constituents on cap and trade and now is loathe to pass the health care plan before the August break to receive another beat down for that. Thank God, I believe there is hope for our future after all.

2. If the H1N1 flu becomes a real killer (it is not now, it is only a fast spreader), we will have a health care crisis that would overwhelm ANY system. People are already working full tilt to prepare for this possibility (developing the vaccine and preparing to mass produce it) and neither bureaucrats nor congress are going to change the system by one iota for the better in the near term (not that I believe they could possibly change it for the better in the long term either.)

I'd just like to know where... (Below threshold)

I'd just like to know where Obama is going to find those "hundreds of billions of dollars of waste under our current system", when it's clear he doesn't know what will be in the legislation. It isn't even beyond the markup stage.

I've learned to distrust Obama when he declares an emergency or a crisis or a looming disaster. He sounds like a frickin' Sham-Wow commercial, except that Vince has more credibility.

"Never waste a crisis.", I think he said.

"You tell me what you want to do and I'll sell it to the American People.", I think he said.

A new 'incomplete' analysis by congressional budget experts of emerging House legislation said it would increase deficits by $239 billion over a decade.
CBO does not score any savings from prevention / wellness and the rest, even if Prevention / wellness is an actual and essential part of the savings.

Besides, the Times in a July 7 editorial argued "As much as 30 percent of all health-care spending in this country--some $700 billion a year--may be wasted on tests and treatments that do not improve the health of the recipients," .

And I think the others such as increased productivity, potential stem cell effect, decreased mental stress, and massive job creation considered, the reform might be within reach.
The report of stem cell research turned around the stock markets world-wide, and then what if the reform package clears the Congress ?

Well, limousine liberals and MSM "elites", you had your fun... and probably almost broke your arm patting yourself on the back when you got the Dear Leader elected.
Now you are getting the taxes you deserve, as Barack Obama is going to BLEED YOU DRY. And you can forget writing off your local taxes on your overpriced eastcoast/leftcoast home... you'll be paying more on that, too.
And here's the kicker: you'll be sending alot of that money to people in red states... to people whom you can't stand.
New Yorkers, Californians, residents of the Northeast and the D.C. Corridor, you elected Obama... so step-up and pay those absurd taxes without complaining. You wanted bigger government.. so now try THIS on for size.
Those who live in places with more rational state tax structures like Texas and Nevada will welcome you when you want to move there... well not really, LOL.
