Obama Administration throws Palestinians under the bus

Hey, this is hope and change to believe in:

The Palestinian leadership today accused the United States of "back-peddling" on the key issue of Israeli settlement growth in the West Bank after Hillary Clinton, the visiting Secretary of State, suddenly praised Israel's prime minister for making "unprecedented" concessions on the issue.

"The negotiations are in a state of paralysis and the result of Israel's intransigence and America's back-peddling is that there is no hope of negotiations on the horizon," said Nabil Abu Rudeinah, a spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Having signally failed to force Israel to meet US demands for a total settlement freeze, Mrs Clinton abruptly switched tack during a one-day visit to Jerusalem this weekend when she called on both sides to swiftly resume long-stalled peace talks.

"What the prime minister has offered in specifics of a restraint on the policy of settlements... is unprecedented," Clinton said. Even under the hopeful days of the Oslo peace talks in the 1990s, Israel never halted the expansion of the large settlement community, which only suffered its first serious reversal in 2005, when then prime minister Ariel Sharon forced thousands of settlers to leave the Gaza Strip.

Mrs Clinton's comments appeared to mark a shift away from pressuring Israel to halt all settlement construction ahead of renewing negotiations and she herself stressed that such a step had never been an American pre-condition to resuming talks.

Binyamin Netanyahu, the right-wing Israeli prime minister, has refused to halt all growth, saying that the nearly half-million settlers in the West Bank and East Jerusalem cannot be expected not to build new facilities as their communities expand.

My initial take was that perhaps Hillary was going rogue, but the LA Times reminds us that this is yet another Obama flip flop, one begun in September:

President Obama called last spring for a freeze but, in the face of Israeli resistance, changed course. To the dismay of Palestinian leaders, Obama demanded only "restraint" on settlements when he met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Abbas in September.

A sliver of foreign policy competence in what to date has been anything but.

Truly change to believe in and to bring hope.

There is no one that Obama will not forsake. Nobody is more important than The One and he will throw anyone under the bus if it appears to be his advantage to do so.

This extends to the American people.

in fairness to the Obama Administration, at least half of what are being referred to as "Flip-Flops" are in actuality just the fact that they can't remember from one day to the next what their position IS!

So they're not "flip-floppers"...they're just incompetent. I feel better already.

Competence is doing the right thing the right way, and isn't when one stumbles into doing the right thing for the wrong reason.

I am thoroughly disillusioned. THE ONE has the gift of gab. None can resist HIS magnificent eloquence. HE can calm the raging seas. HE can 'save' millions of jobs. HE can provide health care for all, at lower rates. HE can pull energy from nothing. I thought that the Palestinians and Israelis where going to come together as one by now. What happened?

Anything that is not a "core" belief can be negotiated. Look around, any campaign promises that Obama made which have now evolved, or been subjected to nuance, or been ignored were not core beliefs for The Won.

By that metric economic policy based on the redistribution of wealth (things being, "better when you spread it around") and single payer health care are core beliefs for Obama. And the rest of it, not so much.

This is the same stalling tactic used by every president since Jimmy Carter, keep the peace with Israel until their term is over. No US president has ever had the testicular fortitude to stand up to Israel, they all seem to cower and piss their pants like little girls after Israel slaps them down, I even thought Hillary had more balls, since she had hers and Bill's, but when it comes to Israel the US are just a bunch of COWARDS.

I don't understand this fear.

As a Hillary Clinton fan I too was concerned Hillary was "going rogue" but it seems that Obama has a habit of backtracking on these things and it just makes him look incredibly weak. Of course Netanyahu was going to test whether Obama had the backbone to stick to his guns and now that Obama blinked, you can expect that Israel will call the shots from now on- in other words, same old same old. Given how much aid we give Israel and given how the administration forced Abbas to table the Goldstone Report, you'd think the administration would be publicly supporting Abbas, but no.

Our policies in the Mid East have just bolstered Hamas at the expense of the Palestinian Authority- pretty ironic, huh? We've played right into Hamas and Netanyahu's hands- both of them don't want to sit down and negotiate and given the events of the last few days, they likely won't.

Supporting Israel is the right thing to do and the Obama admin. should get credit for doing the right thing here. Carping that they didn't do it the right way earlier doesn't help. If the Arab/Muslim world sees that even B. Hussein Obama can't support their policies, they may actually learn to change those policies.

I'm not buying the "It's all Israels fault." In the past 20 years, which side has given something up in "Peace" negotiations? Sure as hell hasn't been the Palestinians. They are and have been nothing but "perpetual victims" since 1948. They've been used by every other Muslim group. Far as I'm concerned, they should all have "I'm Stupid" tattooed on their foreheads. Wonder how well Arafat's wife is doing, living in Paris on all the freaking MILLIONS he stole from his own people.

I expected a lighter hand with Israel eventually. When the Iranians publically starting treating Obama like everyone else and began flipping him off, I figured whether he likes it or not Obama must realize Israel remains an important ally in the Middle East. He came into office thinking he was special and could make inroads where previous (and more seasoned) leaders could not. He must know his hubris is taking a beating. Maybe this is his first step in the learning process. I can think of other areas where he can get a clue too.

Yeah, well maybe if the Palestinians stopped stealing Israeli land and water resources to build their lavishly-subsidized colonies and blinding Israeli children with white phosphorus both sides would be in better shape?

AJB - About 15 minutes of simple research would yield the truths that before the partitioning of the Palestinian Mandate the notion of ethnic Palestinians was unknown and that the people of the region were considered Arabs.

It would also show that Jewish settlers did not steal any land, but rather Arab landowners sold their land at insanely inflated prices and then forced their own people out of their homes to complete the deal to make themselves rich.

It would show that the refugee problem stems not from Israeli malice, but rather from Arab refusal to allow anyone from the region to immigrate thus the Arabs have deliberately created the refugee problem by using their own people as pawns in a political struggle.

Lastly, it would show that the Israeli government has repeatedly offered EVERYTHING that the Palestinians have demanded and the Palestinians still will not make peace.

Anyone who believes otherwise is either stupid or anti-semitic or both.

He did not say you specifically are an anti-Semite. He said your statement was anti-Semitic which it is and which you could easily have repeated without knowing it was such.

Not EVERY critisism of Israel is anti-Semitic but many are. It is beyond hypocrisy for lefties to shout Racism when someone dares disagree with a Black President. But then turns around and blames a specific religious group of people for all the troubles in a region that has been fighting itself for thousands of years.

Jim M,
Offering the Palestinians EVERYTHING? I think the conflict would have been over years ago.

People are starting to realize the injustice that has occurred there since Operation Cast Lead, and the HilDawg's decision to back Israel is going to ruin public appeal.

Israel calls it self-defense, but why limit amounts of water brought by aid workers into Gaza? They aren't allowed to have the cement to rebuild homes, let alone schools or other public works. Much of their basic economic structures, factories, and public works were targets of missile attacks during Operation Cast Lead. Why aren't they allowed to rebuild society? Cement won't fire a rocket into Israel will it? Will water?

Answer that.

The U.S. can't expect the conflict to end anytime soon while illegal construction continues and the blockade remains.

"Offering the Palestinia... (Below threshold)

"Offering the Palestinians EVERYTHING? I think the conflict would have been over years ago."

Okay, I'll be honest here. Israel won't give the Palestinians everything. If they did, they would calmly march out to sea and die all of their own accord and cease to exist.

THAT is the only thing that will end the conflict. And THAT ain't gonna happen.

Detoxifying Yasser Arafat's Disastrous Legacy

Arafat's Double Game. Arafat welcomed the peace process, but not genuine peace. He played a double game until the very end, often extending the olive branch to Israel when speaking in English to Western audiences while calling for jihad and "martyrdom" when speaking in Arabic to his own people. Throughout more than a decade of protracted negotiations, he never permanently halted his use of terrorism, despite repeatedly committing to do so.

Arafat went along with negotiations as long as he gained more than he lost. The Oslo peace process, which began in 1993, anointed him the sole leader of the Palestinians, rescued him from near irrelevance in Tunisia, allowed him to return to Gaza in 1994, and strengthened his stranglehold on Palestinian politics. Arafat supported the Oslo process to pocket a long list of Israeli concessions, including recognition of the Palestine Liberation Organization; the acceptance of Arafat's Palestinian Authority, which would become an embryonic Palestinian state; the withdrawal of Israeli military forces from Palestinian areas; and the negotiation of a two-state solution that would involve extensive Israeli territorial concessions--including Palestinian control over the Muslim holy places in Jerusalem.

However, when it came time to negotiate a final settlement, Arafat squandered an historic opportunity to negotiate peace at the July 2000 Camp David summit. He rejected Israeli and American proposals without offering a counterproposal and walked away from the negotiating table. In September 2000, Arafat unleashed the second intifada, the violent uprising that drove the last nails into the coffin of the Oslo peace process.
Arafat used the Palestinians for his own ends - throwing them under the bus and into a never-to-be-won war with Israel for no Palestinian gain, but an enhancement of his own fortunes and prestige.

And now Obama throws them under the bus again. You'd think they'd have figured out that treadmarks don't look all that good by now, and their 'leadership' is their own worst enemy when it comes to their long-term survival.
