Joe Lieberman Kills Public Option and Medicare Buy-In

I saw on Special Report with Bret Baier this evening that Senator Harkin said that the public option and the Medicare buy-in are dead. I was glad to hear it. All I can say is thank goodness for Joe Lieberman. He stuck to his principles that he would not support a public option or a Medicare buy-in:

Lieberman opposes a proposal that would expand Medicare for people between the age of 55-64. Lieberman has also said he would oppose a government-run insurance option and on Sunday said that Senate leaders need to scale back the bill, removing both provisions from the final product, in order to get his vote.

Congressional staff familiar with negotiations said the White House is strongly urging Reid to work with Lieberman to eliminate the Medicare provision.

Sen Tom Harkin, D-IA, has conceded that the public option, once a top priority for him in healthcare reform, and Medicare buy-in are gone from Senate legislative efforts.

"It's not fair but it's reality," Harkin said, of the move precipitated by an announcement by Lieberman, that he would oppose the healthcare bill if those two items remain in it.

This does not mean this bill isn't still a monstrosity because it is and I hope the entire thing still dies a quick death. The last thing we need are unfunded mandates masquerading as health care reform. All they will do is increase the cost of health care instead of decrease it, which is what the Democrats said this entire process about. We all know that's not true, though. this entire process is about one thing: giving President Obama and the Democrats a perceived win on health care, even if what they end up passing makes the system worse for all Americans.

We should be reforming the health care system in small steps. First we should be able to buy health insurance across state lines. Second, we need to implement real tort reform. These two alone would go a long way to restraining health care costs.

Hot Air has more.

Barry and Rahm plan on 'leaning' on the senators tomorrow. Oh to be within earshot of what they've got to say. Probably something along the lines of "You #%$^& better pass that $#^$&%*# Reform Bill by Christmas or your asses are #[email protected]%#^$."

Only question will be "how much money is Barry going to throw to them in order to get this abortion passed?"

THE FILIBUSTER MUST GO! It's undemocratic. It was created to subvert democracy and the will of the people. The Constitution Of The United States only calls for a simple majority vote in the Senate (51 votes). The Senate should pass the strongest Public Option it can with 51 votes.

CRITICAL!! From jacksmith - Working Class

My Fellow Americans and People Of The World

A strong Government-run MEDICARE like Public Option is CRITICAL!!

A Medicare Buy-in at 55 is a GOOD! idea. But!, not a substitute for a strong Medicare like public option CHOICE for everyone. Nor is the (FEHBP). Without a strong public option on day one the Senate health-care bill is a disaster for the American People and the World. Therefore you must KILL!! it. Without a strong public option the health-care reform bill is MUCH WORSE! than what we have now, and what we have now is a catastrophe. SO YOU MUST KILL!! IT.

What is proposed in the Senate is the worst case scenario for health-care reform. It would shift trillions of taxpayer, public and private dollars into the hands of the private insurance industry (The single most costly, deadly and dangerous product sold in America). And it would compel by law millions of Americans to financially support this oxymoronic criminal enterprise. You cant have a MANDATE WITHOUT A STRONG PUBLIC OPTION CHOICE!

You will have NO! realistic way of controlling cost and quality. Cost will continue soaring through the roof bleeding the American people dry, and KILLing our economy. And our quality of healthcare will continue to decline below our current ranking of "WORST! quality of healthcare delivery in the developed World".

I have to tell you now that the H1N1 virus is a man-made WEAPON OF MASS DESTRUCTION! and TERROR! It is a WEAPONIZED version of a flu virus. It has swept the planet infecting millions. And causing a global pandemic that has killed tens of thousands, and injured millions.

The H1N1 virus is the product of the DISGRACEFUL, GREED DRIVEN PRIVATE FOR PROFIT MEDICAL INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX! It was released in the U.S. in Texas in early January of this year, but not recognized until around April in California. The reason I know this is because when it came to America, it came to see me FIRST! How sweet...

This was around the time the MEDICAL INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX! assaulted the Whitehouse with all their devils deals to cripple and weaken YOUR! healthcare reform. Especially your right to have a single payer system like HR676 (Medicare For All) which most of you wanted.

They don't even want you to have your HUGE!!! compromise position of a strong government-run MEDICARE like Public Option CHOICE. To compete with their DISGRACEFUL, GREED DRIVEN, MURDEROUS, PRIVATE FOR PROFIT PRODUCT (The single most costly, deadly and dangerous product sold in America).

They also wanted to take away your rights to have your government meet it's responsibility to use it's full power to regulate, negotiate, and control drug cost, healthcare cost and quality. Something every other civilized country in the developed World has done for it's people. Their Greed! moral degeneracy and lack of patriotism knows no bounds.

Many of you will remember that before we knew about H1N1. I posted a open message to the President and Congress warning them to be vigilant about their health, and cautious about any medical advice they received. As I said then "they will not hesitate to try and hurt you".

The U.S. and the World have been under a BIOLOGICAL TERROR ATTACK! for over a year now. It is CRITICAL that We The People Of The United States take away control of our healthcare system from the GREED DRIVEN MEDICAL INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX!

For our own National security, and the security of the world.

A Strong, government-run, MEDICARE like Public Option CHOICE. Available to everyone on day one, with the full unfettered power of the federal government to regulate, negotiate, and control cost and quality. Would be the most workable way to deal with this global crisis at this time. Including patent suspensions as needed for national security or the greater good.

As an American I invite the peoples of the World to help us fix our healthcare crisis. And bring pressure on our government to meet it's responsibility to protect global security by controlling, and removing the corrupting influence of GREED and the PRIVATE FOR PROFIT motivations from healthcare in the U.S. and around the World.

I call on the governments of the World and the global intelligence community to track down these MASS MURDERERS, and bring them to justice. CONNECT THE DOTS! And be vigilant that they don't slip in another viral strain on you under the cloak of H1N1 sequestration.

Further, the proposed patent protection on biologic's must be stripped from the US bill. And greatly shorten/restricted, or abolished completely. This is a grave danger to humanity and global security.

I think President Obama is doing the best he can at playing the disastrous deck of cards he inherited from the previous administration. And I think he is doing an excellent job. But the wolves and devils of the medical industrial complex! are trying to exploit, and take advantage of his good heart, and desperate desire to help suffering Americans. But we must be strong and insist that healthcare reform be done right for the American people. Or everyone loose's.

This is all I can say in a message post. I'll try to find a way to tell you more later.

God Bless You My Fellow Human Beings

jacksmith - Working Class

p.s. The so-called nominal H1N1 virus is designed in such a way as to make it more lethal to children and young adults. The medical community must be more vigilant of secondary bacterial infections in the young caused by H1N1. And remember, a viral infection is also a transfer of genetic code to you. Think about it, and be vigilant. :-(

"We should be reforming the health care system in small steps. First we should be able to buy health insurance across state lines. Second, we need to implement real tort reform. These two alone would go a long way to restraining health care costs."

And there's the problem - the two items you mentioned would WORK, without the need for massive amounts of government spending, or government control.

But that's not the real aim, it would seem. The goal we need is to have a system that's functional and economical for all - yet it's really hard to come up with any governmental programs that are both.

We're constantly told that the takeover is a cost-saving measure. That somehow by loading more people into government health care things will become more efficient, that people will receive better care, and costs will go down.

And you've got to wonder just what planet they're on - because that sure doesn't seem like any one we're living on. The one we're on has a very finite supply of tax income, which we're already overspending like crazy, and mounting debt that's going to crush us like an avalanche. While in their world - everything's just fine and you can print all the money you need and take out the credit card whenever you want without ever worrying about the little details of inflation or paying it back!

There's some 'bargains' you just plain can't afford. Government taking over health care is one of them. They may WANT to do it 'for' us - but can you realistically look at the success rates of government programs and say we'll get better service for less money?

And if we won't - then why do it?

Unfortunately, the latest n... (Below threshold)

Unfortunately, the latest news reports seem to be saying that they are taking out the parts that Senator Lieberman does not likeand sneaking in some other things. It isn't over until November 2010 and the Democrats lose enough Senate and Congressional seats to absolutely prevent the passage of these monstosities.

Barney Frank just forced another bill through the House that is even worse than "Helath Care".

It is like the State of Israel and the Arabs. THey can afford to keep attacking no matter how many wars they lose because their enemy is actually moral and follows the rules. We cannot afford to lose even once, because a loss means our destruction (and this time I mean the United States economy).

Of course you want it kille... (Below threshold)

Of course you want it killed it wasn't your parties idea - but that kind of us against them thinking is what enables corporate america to step into the divide and take control. They are going to rig the system in their favor. No matter what political party you allign yourself with - the corporatist win and WE THE PEOPLE loose.

Most of us just want the politicians whichever party they belong to - doing a good job for the american people.

Over 60% of all US bankruptcies are attributable to medical problems. Most victims are middle class, well educated and have health insurance - (The American Journal of Medicine)

The insurance companies and their representatives in Congress would love to perpetuate a business model that is crippling our overall economy - a bunch of great Americans aren't they?

If we get a compromise reform Bill through this Congress that ends the pre-existing conditions exclusions, adds full insurance portability, makes it illegal for insurers to drop patients or raise their rates just because they get sick, repeals the anti-trust exemption, allows for national programs and gets the same policy prices congressmen and women get - as well as setting up exchanges to increase competition, then we will really have done something important.

That the republican party hasn't taken the opportunity to participate in the bipartisanship that was offered to them by this new administration is unconscionable bordering on treasonous and flat out petty.

Their main goal is to win elections - not govern, and to the extent they are on the other side of the isle try and make sure this Presidents star doesn't rise any further.

These are not people with "our" best interest at heart - us against them is ruining this country - and quite frankly I think the tea-baggers should sit down with the greens - because both the far right and the far left have a lot in common - mainly their total disgust with the Status Quo, wall street and big oil. Why are the hyper profitable oil companies receiving tax dollars - millions when that money could be going to veterans benefits?

I saw the fire congress bumper stickers - believe me we all feel the same way. You want us against them - how about the people vs the lobbyist and the corporate buyout and rigging of our so called representative government.

A slavish focus on profit margin might be good for the individual or a business, but it is one helluva lousy way to "govern" a Country.
Most congressmen both (D) and (R) are just personally owned and wholly owned subsidiaries of Corporate America.

Sad but true. But there is hope and major corporate media won't talk about it because they are the big boys too. But - we - us - far right - far left and those in the middle can fix it all with campaign finance reform.

The status quo doesn't want us talking about that but that's what should happen. That's what we should ALL be talking about morning, noon and night. We have a broken country - hijacked by the highest bidders. Campaign finance reform - make that your number one talking point - then we can get back to governing by common sense, and stop accusing each other of complete non-sense.

It has been my experience that it is the rare politician who puts country first but not rare at all for the citizens left, right and center.

Paul, the 60% bankruptcies are medically related statistic is BS.

Its not all the evil corporations fault. Americans have been standing in line to send their jobs overseas for decades, and now we're sending our pay there too. If Americans CHOOSE to change their behavior individually, the EVIL corporations and political special interest groups won't have the traction they need.
