Popular Lies

Earlier this week, I was watching the news fill in some of the details, as they were guessed at, about the raid on Casa del Tonto Muerto, when one of the ABC anchors claimed that the death of Osama bin Laden during the Obama Administration would "define his presidency".

I chuckled at that arrogance, and wondered if President Obama was naïve enough to believe his own spin.  Granted, it was a talking hairpiece that spouted that fairy tale, not the President, but Obama has exaggerated his accomplishments before, and Democrats in particular like to pretend they are war heroes.   If he has decided to run with this latest fantasy, Mr. Obama might want to stop and consider the examples of G.H.W. Bush and Harry Truman, other presidents from the past who were riding high after military success, but who could not turn that moment of glory into re-election.  And quite frankly, no one is seriously going to think of Barack Obama as an action hero or decisive leader.  He's not a 'take charge' kind of guy, so much as he's a 'point finger' kind of guy.    So far Obama has handled the event just about right, but anyone who thinks this 'defines' the Obama Presidency is lying to themselves.

Which got me thinking.  There are a lot of false claims out there these days, and some of them are real whoppers, yet they sometimes become popular.  So, I figured I'd shoot down some of the popular lies that are making the rounds these days.

"Al Qaeda will consider the death of Osama bin Laden a provocation, and will retaliate against the U.S. and her allies with a terrible act."

Look, they're terrorists.  Al Queso considers all kinds of things to be provocations.  No Qurans for detainees at Gitmo?  Provocation!  Marines hand Qurans to Gitmo inmates?  Still a provocation, the infidels touched it!  You get the idea.  These losers are going to hate America no matter what, and in the last three decades, no one's found a way to turn terrorists back in human beings and get them to like and respect us.  All kinds of people tried to reason with terrorists, others tried to appease them.  By now, even the French have figured out that the only language that is effective in negotiating with radical Muslims involves expending ammunition.  Heavy use of ammunition.   They will hate us until either they or we are dead.  The raid that killed bin Laden sent the right message.

"Killing bin Laden is a major victory against Terrorism."

Mostly wrong.  Killing Osama was definitely a great victory for the U.S. and her allies, but terrorists are not known to shut down just because someone greased their boss.   And in bin Laden's case, the guy had basically retired and would toss out the occasional video every so often, in hopes people would not forget him completely.  AQ's operational capability is essentially unchanged.

"The death of Osama bin Laden is too late to mean anything."

The death of Osama bin Laden sends, for the first time since the Bush Administration, the vital message to terrorists that we can and will reach them.  Taking a leadership role in a terror organization makes you a very visible, and permanent, target for U.S. intelligence and military.  The raid on bin Laden makes it clear that once you attack Americans as a terrorist, you can never relax again.  Ever.

"This news just got Obama re-elected."

I'm sure he'd like it to be that easy, but no.  Most elections are about the economy, and since Obama not only made the economy his top issue in 2008 to get elected, but also blew through every sane budget limit he faced since taking office without helping the economy, not to dwell on his war against drilling companies, his desire to punish small business, and Obama's sheer inability to take the debt crisis seriously he's got some heavy lifting to do to get another term.

"Obama is not an American."

There's just no evidence to back that claim up, and a bit that goes the other way.  Yes, Obama is an idiot and a jerk.  But as an example, Donald Trump is clearly an American, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a bigger jerk than The Donald.  As for dumb, Trump's casino once filed for bankruptcy.  Do you know how dumb you have to be to lose money owning a casino?   Yes, Obama loves big government and can't speak coherently without a prompter.  So that just puts him at Katie Couric's level.

"Bush didn't care about getting bin Laden"

Context is a tough concept for a lot of lefties, especially when they only hear what they want to hear in the first place.  The thing to remember about Osama bin Laden, is that he had zero operational value; the man funded Al Qaeda, made introductions to patrons and protectors, and made statements for the group.  Handy, in that he gave the group a face and name that appealed to Muslims, but bin Laden was a figurehead.  President Bush understood quickly that catching or killing bin Laden would be meaningless without a strong response against Al Qaeda; hence his line about bin Laden not being first and foremost in his priorities.  Bush wanted bin Laden, all right, but Bush understood the stakes better than most people, then and now.

"I gave the order" (President Obama)

Maybe not?   (ht: PBunyan)

Excellent post, DJ.

While the killing of bin Laden may create a temporary up-tick in the polls for Obama, voters have short memories, especially concerning "blip" events. You're right; the economy has been and will remain the overriding issue of his Presidency, and pseudo-hawkish antics will not sell well to his core constituency.

2012 is there for the Republicans to lose, not Obama to win. The difference is crucial, and it will all hinge on the fiscal credentials of any potential Republican candidate.

There may or may not be anything to the story on Atlas & socyberty, but it sure fits so well. (And I do remember JT's wise warning about such things, but I couldn't stop myself.)

Nothing makes sense anymore. The one consistent thing about the Obama administration is that there will be so many more questions than answers and whatever few "answers" we get usually not only don't answer the origial question, they raise many, many more. Oh what a tangled web...

DJ: "when one of the ABC anchors claimed that the death of Osama bin Laden during the Obama Administration would 'define his presidency'."

The motif of the narrative we're being sold so far has been the "historic" nature of the whole thing. And historic it has been:

Historic first half African. Historic levels of spending. Historic levels of debt. Historic nationalization and/or socialization of private businesses. Historic numbers of Americans on "public assistance". Historic cronyism and corruption.

And this too, I think is historic. I know we've bombed buildings with knowledge of who was likely in them in the past, but has the US government ever openly sent in a military squad to assinate a specific person before? I mean, sure, its likely happened many times, but openly and proudly like this? I don't think so. I think it's historic.

First off, let's delete the "constant," as that's a straw man sharpening of the point.

But to answer your question, the White House released a photo of the brain trust sitting around watching a screen with anxious faces. That photo invited the conclusion that they were watching the action in progress. Surely no one thought - or was intended to think - that they were watching House Party.

speaking of lies. Only the Obama administration could make the killing of OBL into a seeming "which way did they go George? Where's the bunny rabbit?" clusterfuck that they have done.

Okay, what do we have here:

1) There was a firefight.
2) There was no firefight.
3) Bin Laden was “resisting.”
4) Bin Laden wasn’t armed. (Makes the concept of “resisting” interesting.)
[4.a) And the newest one: the SEALS thought bin Laden was reaching for a weapon.]
5) He used his wife as a shield.
6) His wife was killed too.
7) He didn’t use his wife as a shield. She ran at a SEAL who shot her in the leg, but she’s fine.
8 ) Some other woman — the maid? — was used as a shield. By somebody. Downstairs.
9) That other woman — downstairs — was killed.
10) Maybe not. She was killed unless she wasn’t — and who was she, anyway?
11) Bin Laden’s son was killed.
12) Unless it was some other guy.
13) Bin Laden’s daughter saw him get killed. She’s undoubtedly traumatized, poor dear.
14) They were going to capture Bin Laden until the problem with the helicopter, which was:

A) It had mechanical trouble
B) It did a hard landing
C) It crashed
D) It clipped a wall with a tail rotor, effectively a crash

15.) They were never going to try to capture him; it was always a kill mission.
16.) No, it wasn’t.
17) The chopper blew up.
18) The SEALs blew it up.
19.) Panetta said yesterday the world needed proof and the photo would be released.
20.) Obama said today in an interview he taped with Steve Kroft for “60 Minutes” to be broadcast Sunday that it won’t be released. It’s too gruesome, would offend Muslim sensibilities (something he worries about a lot — I personally do not give a warm fart on a wet Wednesday about Muslim sensibilities), and how would Americans feel if Muslims released pictures of dead Americans?
21.) Kroft — who’s not a total idiot — pointed out that ever since “Black Hawk Down” days, Muslims have been doing precisely that, filming American bodies being dragged through the streets, filming Daniel Pearl’s head being cut off, filming any and everything.
22) Obama gets pissed at CBS, the tape gets cleaned up, that question disappears. (Inside info.)
23.) We got a “treasure trove” of stuff from hard drives, etc.
24.) There were no phone lines, and no internet access at the “mansion,” they didn’t even have TV — what “treasure trove?”
25.) There is obviously in the pictures of the place a large satellite dish. I guess they used it for making salads.
26.) And now, just today: apparently the idea was to capture him, but only if he was naked. There was a suspicion he might be wearing a suicide bomber type explosive vest, or belt. So if he’s not naked and you can’t see if he has a vest on or not – shoot him.

The idiot Carney — they actually managed to find someone who makes Gibbs look good — is currently twisting himself into knots trying to explain why the photograph that the whole world was expecting isn’t going to be released. (Obviously the thing to do is get Trump on the case, he’ll force Obama to release it.)

The military did great, the administration — or whatever that bunch is, kind of like “The Little Rascals” — have managed to turn it into spaghetti. The story has changed so many times in the course of a mere three days it’s a joke — the world would be better off if Panetta had left the little shitwit on the golf course.

No freaking wonder Drudge has it that the Obama admin put out that there would be no more statements. They are walking all over each other trying to get their little soundbite on TV trying to sound like the smartest people in the world.

About the only person that I can think of that has pretty much kept their story short brief and somewhat consistent (though an obvious lie stating that Paki was in on the raid) is Hillary Clinton. Everyone else is running in front of a camera saying "look at me, I got a tidbit for you"

Only Obama can turn something this big into a disaster where they look like a chicken with their head cut off and their left hand doesnt know what their right is doing.

What should have happened was we went in ,got him dead or alive, got him out and told the world no comment. Pakistan could not complain much without admitting they knew bin laden was snatched. All these news releases have revealed much about our intelligence methods, procedures and capabilities just because obama wanted some political credit for his capture. Now the whole world knows we got his computers which will tell us much more than interrogations. We could have broken him if taken alive and then video taped him begging for mercy and had private showings for muslim diplomats still with no official admission that we had him.

Regarding the statement, "Killing bin Laden is a major victory against Terrorism." and your conclusion of "Mostly wrong";

I believe your assessment is wrong for the following reasons.

OBL was the Central Bank of terrorism. He was to AlQueda what Jerry Lewis is to the MDA. He may not have been involved in day to day mil-ops - we don't know at this point - but you can be damned sure he was behind the purchasing and logistics of materials. I am wont to think that perhaps better than the death of OBL is the cache of data the SEALS confiscated (the cake under the icing).

As it stands, the Central Bank is now closed, permanently. The branch locations have no head and no coordination. This leaves them open to infighting, plunder, and disintegration. They will become relatively ineffectual.

No, this is a MASSIVE blow to Islamists. And as the confiscated data is sifted many more blasts will be heard.

Would have been best if the Obama admin had STFU about getting the cake. Instead NO. They have to blab to the entire terrorist world that they got cake. Now anyone who thinks their name may be in that cake is changing plans, locations, etc

You dont tell the enemy that you got intel about who what when where and how. You keep your mouth shut. Unless of course you want to get 5 minutes of glory and not as much results in the end.

If asked about any intel they got from the raid they should have said "Our only objective was to get OBL and do so as quickly as possible. No intel was found. We got in and out as quickly as possible"

The first comment I made about Osama's death is that I am extremely pleased but I will wait over the next three weeks as the real story comes out. (lefties please check my comments) Why would I say that? Because Obama cannot be decisive at all. He has demonstrated a complete lack and inability to lead. This operation was very concise, serious, deadly serious and had to be done with a minimal plan and minute to minute adjustments by the CIA and Seals. Obama had NOTHING to do with that. Anyone that believe he did after what he demonstrated over the last two years is insane.

Over the next two weeks, we will learn that most of the Atlas story is right on. Military leads will show that they had to beg and beg to do their job. ww

Obama hardly looks like someone who ordered anything. He's hunched down, sitting to the side, looking more like someone dragged to watch something they fear.

And WW is correct about going to GZ to "spike the ball" there.

Looking at how the WH has bungled the post-assassination story lines, do they honestly expect us to think they did anything other than get out of the way while the grownups did their jobs, albeit 16 hours after Obama realized he had to appear to make a decision.
