Bobby and Pooty-poot, up in a tree…

Russian President Vladimir Putin, second right, holds the diamond-encrusted 2005 Super Bowl ring belonging to New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, left , as News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch, second left, and Citigroup Chairman Sanford Weill look on during a meeting of American business executives at the 18th century Konstantin Palace outside St. Petersburg, Russia, Saturday, June 25, 2005. Kraft showed the ring to Putin _ who tried it on, put it in his pocket and left, said Russian news reports. It isn't clear yet if Kraft, whose business interests also include paper and packaging companies and venture capital investments, intended that Putin keep the ring. Earlier this week, everyone was abuzz with the story of Bob Kraft, Vladimir Putin, and a Superbowl ring.

To those just joining us, let’s recap:

A group of American businessmen, including New England Patriots owner Bob Kraft, are touring Russia. While meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin, Kraft noticed Putin was admiring his most recent Superbowl ring. Kraft took it off and handed it to Putin to admire, and instead Putin pocketed it and walked off. Kraft belatedly announced that the ring “wasn’t intended” to be a present, but when Putin admired it, he “decided” to let him keep it.

Now, most people are looking at this as a sign of Putin’s character, that he’d just presume the ring was a gift or his for the taking. But I think it has another meaning.

Here we have a man from Massachusetts giving another man a ring — and not just any ring, but a valuable gold ring studded with (I think) 125 diamonds. And the man accepting it.

Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but I think that Mr. Kraft and Mr. Putin are legally engaged to marry in the eyes of Mr. Kraft’s home state of Massachusetts.

Lord only knows what that will do to our international relations…
