Chicago Man Arrested for Terrorist Plot

From ABC News:

ABC News has learned a Chicago-area man has been charged with plotting a terrorist attack.

Sources say the man is accused of planning to use firearms and explosives to attack a specific mall in Rockford, Ill. The alleged plan was to target this mall during the holiday shopping season.

The suspect is being described as a “lone wolf” style terrorist and is not believed to have ties to any organized terrorist group.

MSNBC says that the attack was to take place in Rockford, Illinois, and get this piece of information:

The FBI has been aware of the plot and has been monitoring him closely, Williams reported. The plan was allegedly ideologically motivated. No other details were released, but authorities said the arrest eliminated the risk of the attack being carried out.

Ideologically motivated? That could mean virtually anything.

Drudge reports that a press conference is forthcoming.

Hot Air and Stop the ACLU are also following this.

Update: Now we know what the vague term “ideologically motivated”means: the guy wanted to “commit acts of violent jihad.” That doesn’t sound ideologically motivated to me. It sounds to me like this guy was religiously motivated.

Update II: Drudge has more information on the suspect: he’s a 22-year-old Chicago man, Talib Abu Salam Ibn Shareef. CBS2 Chicago identifies him as Derrick Shareef. He also wanted to use grenades to kill innocent people while they were Christmas shopping with their families:

He was apprehended after meeting with an undercover agent in a Rockford store parking lot to trade a set of stereo speaksers for four hand grenades and a handgun, the U.S. Attorney’s office said.

Shareef was charged with one count of count of attempting to damage or destroy a building by fire or explosion and one count of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction, authorities said.

Shareef allegedly planned to set off the grenades at the CherryVale Shopping Mall, near Interstate 90 and Interstate 39 on Rockford’s east side. The mall has about 130 retail stores and is owned byy a Tennessee-based company, authorities said.

Update: III: The Smoking Gun has the 11 page affidavit

Update IV: Sensible Mom responds to the characterization that Shareef was a “lone wolf” without any ties to terrorists or terrorism:

Although reports suggest that Shareef (He don’t like it, Rock the Casbah, Rock the Casbah) was not associated with any terrorist group, I not buying it. What Mosque does he “pray” at? What Islamic “charities” has he donated to? Does he have roomates? Who are his family members associated with? Let’s get at least those basic questions answered first.
