For years, we’ve been telling girls that they can do everything boys can, that they have the very same opportunities as the boys, that they can be just as good as the boys.
It turns out that they can be just as bad as the boys, too.
I don’t remember how I was at certain ages very well. My rule of thumb is to take the age, subtract six, and use that to recall what class I was in at the time. A 10-year-old is a fourth-grader, and I simply can’t imagine myself doing those sorts of things at that age.
Obviously the girl in the story needs help, not jail — but until she can get it, I think that keeping her locked up for now is the safest thing for everyone — her most of all.
