In today’s update we’ve got musings about the feds’ ICEPIC terror/immigration tracking database, the government’s wireless airwaves auction, the oil and natural gas sector, state immigration laws, and medical marijuana and workplace laws.

Still (not) Smokin’
Employers are permitted to fire workers who use medical marijuana even if it legally was prescribed under state law by a doctor, the California Supreme Court ruled on Thursday.

Medical pot should be legalized. It’s the greatest thing since sliced bread for terminal cancer and AIDS patients, along with those suffering from other debilitating illnesses, e.g., neuropathy, M.S., etc.
Having said that, however, unless and until federal laws get changed those sorts of court decisions absolutely are correct. The law is the law. The Supremecy Clause is the Supremecy Clause. Glenn Reynolds and Lou Dobbs would agree 100%, as would anybody who advocates, for example, strict compliance with federal immigration laws. Because obviously one cannot argue for strict compliance with federal immigration laws but in the very next breath advocate against strict compliance with federal drug laws. To do so would be intellectually dishonest and hypocritical.

Cause and Effect
With energy prices soaring last year, oil and natural gas drilling in the U.S. rose to a 22-year-high.

Somewhere, BTW, a Sierra Club enviro-drone is reading this entry and is starting to weep. Not because of the “environment.” Not at all. Most so-called “environmentalists” care little to nothing about the environment. They’re socialists. Anti-capitalists. Nothing more, nothing less.

A massive new federal database program dubbed ‘ICEPIC” culls information from more than nine law enforcement sources and will help law enforcement agents link possible terrorists and other suspected criminals, including criminal and fugitive aliens, with criminal associates whose records already are in the system and are known to law enforcement.

I love it.
Other than waging necessary and appropriate wars against foreign enemies, there is no better use of public money nor is there a more basic function of a civil government than endeavors designed to punish by incarceration the very lowest dregs of society, e.g., fugitive criminal aliens.
