Last April, when Cambridge police arrested President Obama’s old friend Henry “Skip” Gates at his home, our Commander in Chief showed that he is a master of the snap opinion:
“Now, I don’t know, not having been there and not seeing all the facts, what role race played in that. But I think it’s fair to say, number one, any of us would be pretty angry; number two, that the Cambridge police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own home; and, number three, what I think we know separate and apart from this incident is that there’s a long history in this country of African-Americans and Latinos being stopped by law enforcement disproportionately. That’s just a fact.”
Now, over the weekend, he was asked by George Stephanopoulos about the recent scandals involving ACORN:
STEPHANOPOULOS: How about the funding for ACORN?
OBAMA: You know, if — frankly, it’s not really something I’ve followed closely. I didn’t even know that ACORN was getting a whole lot of federal money.
STEPHANOPOULOS: Both the Senate and the House have voted to cut it off.
OBAMA: You know, what I know is, is that what I saw on that video was certainly inappropriate and deserves to be investigated.
STEPHANOPOULOS: So you’re not committing to — to cut off the federal funding?
OBAMA: George, this is not the biggest issue facing the country. It’s not something I’m paying a lot of attention to.
Let’s see… he hasn’t followed it closely, didn’t know that ACORN got a lot of federal money, says there’s only one video of them acting “inappropriately, and isn’t paying a lot of attention to the matter.
As Roger Simon noted, this almost Fisks itself. A guy who spent years as a community organizer (including working closely with ACORN early in his career, and accepting their help in getting elected) is NOT familiar with the funding for THE biggest group of “community organizers?” He thinks that there ought to be investigation, but has he mentioned that to his Attorney General?
OK, so the Cambridge guy is a friend of his, but did he really think it was worth focusing the attention of the White House on the story?
On the other hand, here’s a group that he has a lengthy and substantial history with having some serious trouble with the federal government, and he’s not paying much attention to it?
I call bullshit.
I’m not going to ask for Obama to be honest with us. He’s too set in his ways to change now.
But could he please, please, please, learn to get at least most of the facts on a situation before he starts shooting his mouth off? Is that too much to ask of the president of the United States?
